There are over a thousand empty homes in North Cornwall, according to Liberal Democrat MP Dan Rogerson.
The official figures, given in response to a parliamentary question, reveal that there are 1,226 homes lying empty in North Cornwall alone.
Dan Rogerson, MP for North Cornwall, said: "There is a shortage of housing in Cornwall that is pushing house prices up for local people and yet there are properties lying empty. We need to look at ways to bring these homes into use for the people of Cornwall. There are enough empty homes in North Cornwall to house the homeless in the area ten times over. Nationally there are more than 100,000 households in temporary accommodation, 1 in 10 children live in overcrowded accommodation, yet there are more than 700,000 empty homes waiting to be filled. Many homes lying empty attract nuisance and vandalism. I am running a national campaign to get people to report homes that are lying empty to their local council, so that the owners can be traced and appropriate action taken."
